Hitchin’s Town Hall under threat.  North Herts District Council is planning to convert Hitchin Town Hall into a District-wide Museum, bringing to an end its main function as the principal community venue for Hitchin.  Strong arguments against this plan were presented by Hitchin’s business and community organisations at a full meeting of the District Council on 3 December 2009.  To see this presentation as a PDF file, click here.  In the subsequent debate, the Council decided to postpone the matter until its next full meeting, on 4 February 2010.

Luton Borough Council is now planning to build 5,500 houses on Hertfordshire’s Green Belt.  The area includes the fine countryside around Cockernhoe, Putteridge Bury, Tea Green and Mangrove Green.  It stretches as far as the Lilley Bottom valley, and beyond in the direction of Great Offley.  The Council are also planning a bypass road through this area to link Luton Airport to the A505.

The public consultation period has now ended, but it is known that a very large number of objections were made against the scheme.

The objection made by the Hitchin Society may be seen as a PDF file - click here to view
